StarMed Healthcare made a name for itself in early 2020 at the onset of the pandemic. They’d just established a diagnostics lab and were one of the few labs in the state of North Carolina that could keep up with the demand for COVID-19 testing and vaccines. Over the course of 2 years, StarMed administered almost 2 million COVID-19 tests, vaccines, and treatments. In 2022, after learning about the nationwide backlog of forensic DNA test kits, StarMed’s president decided it was time to refit the lab to be able to help out with a new problem.
While most labs are currently running a 3-5 year wait time for DNA analysys, StarMed Lab Diagnostics can process DNA evidence (including rape kits) and deliver reliable results in 60 days or less. The lab is situated to make a tremendous dent in the nationwide DNA backlog and help the criminal justice system bring closure to thousands of open cases. Dr. Arin Piramzadian | Medical Director
Our team is led by our Medical Director Dr. Arin Piramzadian, a board-certified physician with over 12 years of experience in Emergency Medicine and 8 of experience years as a Lab Director.
During his time at Onslow Memorial Emergency Department, Dr. Piramzadian was the leader of the Sepsis and Stroke Protocol teams and patient satisfaction. He also sat on the Blood and Tissue Committee, overseeing and reviewing the proper use of the limited blood supply in a community-based hospital, all while working to educate nursing and support staff.
Dr. Piramzadian is also the former Chief Medical Officer of MedFirst Primary and Urgent Care where he provided leadership and oversight for over 25 offices. During his tenure, he led nearly 160 providers ensuring compliance with up-to-date medical and company guidelines, prompt and accurate charting and coding, monitoring the quality of care provided, holding providers to a high standard by auditing and reviewing charts, and giving constructive feedback on a regular basis.

We utilize the industry standard STR (short tandem repeat) analysis and provide comprehensive reports, all delivered in 60 days or less.
Forensic casework analysis for all case types
State labs often only have the capacity to analyze DNA in violent crime cases. And even then, the turnaround time is usually 3-5 years.
We can screen evidence for sources of DNA for any type of case, including:
- Homicides
- Assault
- Sexual assault kits
- Cold cases
- Robbery/theft
- Property crimes
- Gun possession
Evidence can be mailed straight to our lab, or you can set up an appointment to drop the evidence off in person.
Our forensic scientists keep detailed records and treat all evidence with meticulous care.
If there are any traces of DNA on the evidence, we’ll find it.
Screening and serology
Our highly trained serologists and DNA analysts expertly screen evidence for the presence of bodily fluids including blood, saliva, semen, and vaginal fluid. They meticulously prepare the evidence for DNA analysis, extracting DNA from even the smallest traces of human biological material for accurate profiling.
DNA analysis
Once we’ve extracted and screened any sources of DNA, any traces that come back as positive are separated from the evidence and sent on for amplification. This process is often compared to biological photocopying because it lets scientists make copies of certain parts of the DNA.
During amplification, our forensic scientists can even look at the smallest DNA samples and analyze them, allowing us to see whether or not the DNA matches the control.
We then write a report that clearly and objectively states whether or not the DNA is a match.
Court testimonies as an expert witness
Our scientists are available as experts in DNA analysis and can deliver testimonies in court to elaborate on our findings.
As scientists, we’re completely unbiased. We can testify for the defense or the prosecution. We only testify to the results of our analysis. We’re there to tell the truth based on the science.
